RE: 2wd or 4wd?

While we have only used the 4WD occasionally when moving the trailer in a campground, it comes in mighty handy when it snows. A 2WD pick-up is downright dangerous during those times. It also allows us to take some of the back roads in teh National Forest / BLM areas without a worry.

RE: Is the F250 enough truck?

When we bought our truck, we went with the F350 based on the thought that we would be getting a 5th wheel in the future.

RE: Looking for Jayco deal

Rick's RV is Joilet, Il is a solid Jayco dealer. Purchased our last trailer thru them and were very pleased.

RE: Unhitch Or Not

Have done it both ways. As long as we can get the TT level and we're not going anywhere, we'll usually leave it hitched.

RE: GPS ??

My wife has a Garmin Nuvi 260 (with verbal instructions) and I have a Garmin GPS60CS, which we use for Geocashing and traffic when not using the Nuvi. Both work great. As always, gotta watch for the occasional times when the unit "wants" to put you in a tight spot!

RE: Tire air pressure

We set it within a couple lbs of the max presssure when cold and check it before every trip. Tires can be twitchy things and the one of the best ways to have longetivity / better mileage is having the tires set to the mfg specs.

RE: New Jayco satellite TV issue

We put in a second connector for the Satalite cable on the outside of the trailer. When we hit a campground with free cable, then we'll use the cable input. Otherwise, the Dish is set up.

RE: Jayco

We have owned several Jayco's and have never had a complaint. They are a solid, well built product and the three dealers I have worked with thru the years have been very good too.

RE: F-350 SRW 6.8L V10 Up Date See last post

As you can tell, I have one of the newer V10 F350's. Reason was simple: The 3 valve set-up creates more power and the trans is more bullit proof / can handle heat better than the older models. It is one sweet engine!

RE: Does it matter?

As noted above, the amount of $$ you have does not mater - the common sense and safety you exhibit does. On more than one occasion I have seen people who pretend to have lots of $$ / brag about it eventually wind up in a position they never should have if they really had the $$ they claimed they did.

RE: PDI Questions

I suspect what the dealer means to say is that they go thru it first / correct issues that they find. Once it is ready for delivery, you should not have to inspect it. He /she is not saying that you cannot inspect it. I do agree that you want to do a full inspection before you take ownership of it. Good luck!

RE: Mice

We have a couple mice every spring when we move back in (we keep our trailer at a seasonal campground when we are not using it.) Most years they are gone by the time we move in (April 15th). To minimize the visitors, we empty out the trailer / store stuff in plastic containers so there is nothing for them to use. I'm thinking that they are getting in thru the vent in th roof. I don't see any other way. We are not allowed to use moth balls around the trailer per park rules (and it smells like heck anyway.) I would be thrilled if there was a way to keep them out!

RE: Corner seam repairs and wood rot - UPDATE

Ah, the joys of fixing the damage from a leak. The major concern is that you have to make sure that you have removed all the wood that has been damaged by water / make sure that anything that was just wet that you decide to reuse has been thoroughly dried out. My brother-in-laws and I rebuilt a trailer last year that had severe damage. The amazing part was the amount of mold that had appeared. Fortunately, one of us was in the mold remediation business so once we removed the damaged material, we could insure that the mold would not come back. The scarry part was that some of the types of mold were scarry enough that we needed to use masks / epa suits during the demo phase. Yikes!
Good luck. Lucks like you are well on your way to completion.

RE: Stupid newbie hitching question

Before you hook up the trailer the first time, take a moment to move the latch on top of the hitch from the horizontal position (locked) to the vertical position (open / ready to recieve hitch ball) while looking under the hitch at teh spot where the ball goes into the hitch. You will see semi "U" shape bracket move back and forth based on the position of the latch. That U latch must be under the ball when the trailer is hitched up. I always take a quick look at it before we head out each day. Hope this helps.

RE: Stowing bunk bars and metal supports

Never had a problem with our poles. We just stored the poles under the mattress with the tabs of the poles facing down toward the wood. The trailer lasted 20 years.

RE: How do you dry your PUP in restricted neighborhoods?

When we used to have the pop-up, we would just roll it in the garage after a trip, open it as much as possible and it would dry out fine. You are right that if you close it up before it is dry, you will have mold before you know it.

RE: How many gallons of RV Antifreeze do you use?

2 to 3 Gallons. i'm pretty generous with the stuff cuz it is a lot cheaper than broken lines / parts due to freezing and in this part of the world it does get cold on occasion!

RE: Theft/vandalism?

I agree that it sounds more like someone who was unhappy about your trailer for one reason or another. Who would cut off a connector??? Does not make any sense / would draw attention if the trailer was pulled out and no brake lites worked. Bummer either way....

RE: Security/Locks for Trailer?

Ours is at a seasonal campground when not in use. Don't use one there as the owner is very particular as to who enters, even in the off season. We used to have a lock on our tent trailer when it was stored in a comercial lot. Actually had more trouble with people trying to get inside the trailer when we stored it for a short time at our old apartment complex years ago.....
